What's growing at Eden's?

To give you an idea of what is going on at an organic farm located in north Texas, as we plant, (and have time to update the website), we'll share with you what we're currently growing.

The purpose of this page is two-fold; to help gardeners looking for basic guidance on planting times as well as to help inform folks of real time farming versus planting that vegetable garden in your back yard where conditions are more manageable and controlled.  When you go to a local market stand and wonder why something isn't there, perhaps this information will help you to understand local produce in north Texas.

Spring has sprung! - Most everything for the warm season has been planted - at least the first succession, and in some cases, 2 or more are in.  Tomatoes are growing at leaps and bounds, cucumber plants seem to double every day, squash is doing great, peppers are in, both sweet and hot, wax bush beans will go in asap - waiting on some irrigation parts that were backordered, grumble grumble - and we're watching Kale, chard, green mustard and beets, carrots, and garlic get closer and closer to ready to eat.  Yum! Eggplant and okra are next up - soon as we stay up out of the 50's at night.....Sweet potatoes will go in after the Irish potatoes come out. Due to the wet winter, our field was flooded and potatoes stalled out, and we even lost some.  But we're seeing most of them growing now - they'll just be a bit behind schedule this year. We will be doing our regular foliar feed with fish and seaweed spray, and I'll be adding BT for the caterpillars that have started taking a liking to some of our greens.

Raining Cats & Dogs!

With all of the rain and cold, we've had a difficult time getting the soil ready to do much of anything. In between rain events, we managed to put a few dry days together and get some staples in the ground with the existing cool season veggies already struggling through the coldest winter on Dallas' record books in quite some time.

Kale, collards, mustard greens, spinach, lettuces, cutting (green) onions, garlic, cabbage (which is struggling to form heads)  and a few other cool season crops are in and growing.

We'll be waiting a bit longer to put in tomatoes and peppers - the nights are still pretty chilly and the soil has not warmed up yet either. But, with this week's warm temps we may be out of the woods early this year.  Hope so!

Potatoes are finally in the ground....

Purple Majesty

This potato was developed by Colorado growers using natural cross-breeding techniques that somehow resulted in a superspud containing freakishly high amounts of antioxidants. We like that!  (Read more)

Bintje

This was a favorite last year of our CSA members. Produced nicely and tasted wonderful!  It has a slightly gold-colored skin and light, cream-colored flesh with a waxy, mid-dry texture making it an excellent all-purpose potato.

Red Gold

Beautiful, early variety with lightly netted orange-red skin and delicate yellow flesh that cooks up flaky and delicious. High yields of smooth, uniform, medium-sized potatoes under most conditions. Scab- and virus-resistant. A new try for Eden's this year. Join us!

Yellow Finn

Another favorite of our CSA family last year. Buttery, outstanding flavor and texture. Smooth, thin, yellow skin and yellow-fleshed potato produces high yields. Round, slightly flattened and sometimes pear-shaped. 3 inch diameter.
